Freight Agent Definition

A freight agent is an independent professional contractor and an integral part of the shipping process. Ideally, they work to link shippers with renowned carriers able and willing to ship their items. Freight agents work for freight brokers and play a vital role in managing freight between clients and carriers. A freight agent can be a solo contractor or a team of people working under the licensing of a freight broker.

Note that these agents do not operate or arrange for movements alone. They can only run successful businesses by partnering with a freight broker. This is because, unlike freight brokers, freight agents assume very little liability for the shipping process. Freight brokers can build a massive regional or nationwide presence by working with a freight agent. They do not even need to acquire office space. Even better, freight brokers will notice a significant increase in revenue as freight agents strive to build and maintain good client relationships.

More About Freight Agents

Generally, freight agents earn their income on a commission basis, depending on how they negotiate with their freight brokers. Sometimes, these agents are referred to as sales agents as they promote the services of the freight brokers they partner with. Freight agents go above and beyond to build their customer base and build lasting partnerships.
