A trucking business could mean a single truck with one owner or many company-owned trucks operated by many drivers. A truck transports raw material from production locations to manufacturing centers to regional distribution centers. The United States Labor Department reports that up to70 % of our food, clothing, and other basics used in homes, jobs, or schools are transported by trucks.

Running a successful trucking business is not an easy venture. First, this business must pay special taxes and attain special permits from the federal, state, and local governments to operate legally. Besides, truck drivers require commercial driver's licenses, among other requirements, such as hazardous material certifications when needed.

Trucking businesses might choose to specialize in shipping one product, while others are well equipped and able to transport a wide range of items. These might range from household items to agricultural, construction, or heavy military equipment. Others might transport valuable items such as irreplaceable sculptures and art collections to or from museums escorted by armed guards. The trucking business plays a crucial role in transporting the load from pickup to delivery. Companies that transport corrosives, fuel, and other hazardous materials are taken through special training and must have a valid and up-to-date CDL before operating.
