What is Deadhead Trucking?

Transporting freight from Point A to Point B allows drivers and companies receiving the product to benefit. What often happens after that is less than beneficial for the driver, as they have to return to Point A carrying no freight and still paying for fuel.

Deadhead trucking is the scourge of the industry and can cost independent drivers as well as companies a lot of money on fuel and transport time that could best be utilized in other ways. It often happens due to logistical problems or a lack of available product at the destination.

Many trucking companies do their best to provide backhaul jobs for their drivers so that they don't lose money on the trip back to the company. This is when companies located at Point B need freight moved from them to Point A and pays the trucking company a discounted rate to haul product back with them.
