COMMON CARRIER EXPLAINED
A common carrier is best described as a public or private organization that transports goods and people for a certain charge. Common carriers are also in telecommunications and other public sectors. A common carrier offers its services to the public and does not restrict its client's database. Private carriers only offered their services to certain individuals.
A common carrier accepts all cargo from all individuals and takes responsibility for the goods in their possession. The carriers charge a specific rate to all individuals depending on the cargo being transported. Private carriers may refuse to offer their carrier services to certain individuals and do not accept their cargo.
CONTRACT CARRIERS
There are distinguishing aspects between a common carrier and a contract carrier. A common carrier is able to work with multiple shippers to fulfill the duty they have to their customers. Contract carriers work under contract with specific shippers. The shippers can work via air or water, but the carrier is only restricted to work with one shipper as they are in a long-term contract.
There are other types of carriers, including regional carriers, local carriers, and national carriers. Local carriers are the smallest carriers who work with a small fleet of trucks. National carriers handle large shipping needs, including international needs. Each carrier has its own rate depending on its shipping method and type of cargo being transported.

WHICH CARRIER IS THE BEST?
Common carriers are effective, but they do not provide the personalized service that some need in the business. Small carriers like local and regional carriers have a small customer database, and therefore they offer a more personalized service. On the other hand, big common carriers have the capacity and are equipped to move large amounts of cargo effectively.
Ultimately it depends on the cargo that needs to be shipped, your business needs, and the destination of the cargo. Some freight carriers, like common carriers, may not be effective when handling fragile goods. The carrier should be well equipped to handle your freight with ease. The carrier should also be flexible and provide personalized service so that your goods arrive safely.
THIRD PARTY
Third-party logistics is highly linked with carrier services. The best carriers are known by third-party logistic companies as they handle a lot of shipping requirements. The third-party logistics companies could also provide other services that could not be provided by common carriers or contract carriers.
