What is Freight?
Freight are the commodities being moved from place to place through any transportation means.
There are four primary modes of cargo shipping available for shippers.
Modes of Freight Shipment
Ground Shipments - They are commonly done by trucks and trains. They are particularly essential when shipping cargo from its pick-up point to the airport or seaport seaports, where it is transported in bulk. It also involves picking load from the shipper and delivering it to its destination, commonly referred to as door-to-door transportation.
Water - Majority of cargo shipment is mainly done by ships. Suffice to say, merchant shipment is the backbone of the world economy, accounting for approximately 90%of worldwide trade.
Air - It is the fastest mode of freight shipment, hands down. It is mainly used for long-distance cargo transport but is an expensive choice compared to other options.
Intermodal - They involve more than one shipping mode. It particularly refers to the intermodal containers which are easily shipped between trucks, rails, ships, and planes.

Common Types of Freights Services
All the four main types of freight transportation options have specific processes and procedures that are particular for each shipping mode. That said, all types of freight are associated with their specific service groups. For instance, ground freight can be categorized into less than truckload and full-truckload.
Less-than-truckload commodities are not enough to fill the entire truck. In such a case, other shippers can also come together and make smaller shipments which saves them the overall cost. Full Truckload (FTL) refers to when the entire truck is dedicated to a single shipper. Especially when transporting high-value freight over shorter shipping times.
