Pilot Cars and Escort Vehicles Definition
Pilot and escort vehicles are automobiles designated to escort trucks hauling oversized and abnormally shaped freight on the highway. Typically, a vehicle carrying a load more than 12'wide, 14'5" high, and over 90' will require two or even more pilot or escort cars.
Pilot and Escort Vehicles - What Do They Really Do?
A pilot car driver works in conjunction with the truck driver to facilitate safe and timely cargo delivery to its correct destination. Usually, the pilot driver moves in front or at the back of the shipping truck, warning the public and other road users of a wide road approaching. They also signal other motorists when there is a disruption of traffic due to the truckload. Pilot car drivers are in constant communication with the truck driver using the CB radio, which allows them to alert the driver about accidents, traffic congestion, or anything that might interfere with the transportation process.
An escort car driver pays attention and ensures that the truck driver does not mistakenly violate the traffic rules or cause other road disruptions during shipping. They also ensure that the load is still secure and ensure everything, including crossing bridges and switching lanes, is safe for the truck driver.

Pilot Cars and Escort Vehicle Regulations
At Heavy Equipment Transport, we are sure to provide pilot and escort vehicles for all overweight loads we ship locally and across the states. Typically, escort and pilot cars are fitted with conspicuous signs to warn other motorists that an unusually wide load is approaching or following behind. These include flags, signboards, and flashlights that are flashy enough to draw the driver's attention.
These cars also contain a CB radio to facilitate their communication with heavy-haul drivers and emergency equipment such as first aid kits and fire extinguishers.
