LTL Transport Definition

LTL (or less than truckload) transport is the shipping of relatively small loads, mostly less than 150 pounds. During LTL shipping, the shipper only pays for the portion of the trailer that their cargo occupies while other shippers fill and pay for the remaining unoccupied space.

Preparing for LTL Shipping

If your freight is not well prepared for shipping, cases such as damages, delays, or excess freight fees might arise. Here is how to prepare for a successful LTL shipping and delivery process:

Determine your Freight's Accurate Dimensions: Carriers will use your freight dimensions and weight to determine your freight class and cost. Having accurate measurements will facilitate more precise freight quotes, thereby preventing overcharging. Besides, carriers such as Heavy Equipment Transport use these dimensions to determine the amount of freight that can fit in a particular truck.

Proper Documentation: The Bill of Lading is one of the most critical documents in LTL shipping. It is therefore crucial that you complete and present it to the carrier in good time.

Efficient Packaging and Labeling: While the type of packaging depends on the freight at hand, palletizing and crating are the most common options. Besides maximizing the truck capacity, pallets and crates also facilitate safe hauling preventing freight damage and loss.

Additional LTL Shipping Services

Expedited- When you are dealing with perishable or time-sensitive freight, you can request your carrier for an expedited freight quote, of course, at an extra cost.

Limited Access- This is a unique service for freight headed to areas with limited access such as camps, rural locations, construction sites, or strip malls, to mention a few.

Liftgate: When your cargo exceeds 100 pounds and the receiving destination has no dock, liftgate services facilitate easy and safe loading and unloading.

Inside Pickup and Delivery-With LTL shipping, you can request the carrier to deliver your goods right indoors or enter the building to access the freight for shipping.
