Ground Freight Trucking Definition
Ground freight is a cheaper cargo-hauling method mainly dealing with large-sized and heavy shipments which are moved from one point to another through various means of ground transportation.
Usually, ground freight trucking takes between three to ten days in transit based on pick up and drop off (destination) points. All the same, if your long-haul shipment requires an overnight and quicker delivery, you might want to seek air freight shipping alternatives.
Ground Freight Shippers
Ground freight shippers use trucks to ship cargo both locally and across the country. Usually, a basic truck can seamlessly haul a maximum of 26 pallets to various destinations. A standard pallet is 48" wide x 40" long and 48" high. A freight higher than 48'' high is considered a double pallet.
Different Types of Ground Freight Trucking Services
Full Truck Loads (FTL) : A full truckload typically hauls 24 to 26 pallets. Being a full truckload means that freight can be shipped from their point of origin directly to their accurate destinations. Besides, an FTL can incorporate refrigerated trucks and seamlessly haul oversized cargo. This method is an excellent option for large freights requiring extra space, special conditions, and speedy deliveries to their destinations.
Less Than Truck Loads : It is the most common type of ground freight, generally larger than parcels but smaller than Full Truck Loads. They ship between 1-6 pallets and mostly involve shared payloads. At some point, the cargo is exchanged between trucks and hauled across local terminals. While this shipping method might take longer than a Full Truck Load, it is also relatively cheaper and best for smaller items. As such, small and middle businesses can consolidate their small shipments and have them hauled as one entity at cost-shared prices.
